There are two types of Fins that are available for you to purchase, but remember each one has drawbacks and advantages over the other.
First style: Open Heel Fins.
These must be worn with some type of wetsuit booties (pictured below) and are ideal for colder water temperatures because much of your body heat will escape through the head, hands, and feet first. Another positive about these fins are that they generate a tremendous amount of force when you kick with them. The combination of your booties being strapped in with the generally wider dimensions of these fins allow you to cruise right through the water while diving.
The drawback on these fins are that they are not ideal in any way for free diving because they do limit the motion of your foot to kick as freely as you need them to on a single breath of air.

As you see, these fins come in all shapes, colors, and designs.

Option two: Closed heel fins.
These fins are able to be worn without anything on your feet. They give you a larger freedom of motion when swimming but may not provide the same amount of power as the open heel fins. They also let more body heat out compared to wearing wetsuit booties in colder water temperatures.
